ACTION: WOMEN RULE—PIN YOUR ALLEGIANCE
Artist Kate Haug made a series of custom 1″ pins to hand out at the recent Women’s March. With the inauguration of the Trump administration, which seeks to dismiss, degrade and dismantle the rights of all women, the pins unite marchers with women who have battled for equal rights. These pins enter into long history of political ephemera relating to the women’s rights movement. Featuring images of women who were often lone dissenters in critical moments, the pins made it into more than 400 hands. Included in the series were Texas State Senator Wendy Davis (who stood for an 11 hour filibuster against a highly restrictive abortion bill) and Representative Barbara Lee (who was the only dissenting vote against the Iraq War). The pins also highlighted women who are “firsts” such as Shirley Chisholm (NY-12), the first African-American woman elected to Congress and Representative Judy Chu (CA-27), a NARAL ProChoice Champion and the first Chinese-American woman elected to Congress.

This series is part of a larger project called “A Series of Pin-Backs” which features vintage pins from the Equal Rights movement.
